DEGREASED ROLL NUMBERS
SCHOOLS IN OTAGO DISTRICTS EVIDENCE OF SMALLER FAMILIES The attendance returns for the first term ended. May. 4 show. that, at the end of the term there were 240 schools (including side schools) in operation in the Otago Education Board’s district. The figures for the term are given below, in comparison with the figures for the first term of 1933:
Ist term, 1954. Ist term, 1933. Decrease.
Since the end of last term the Manuka Crock School has been reopened and the Pukctiro and Tapni Schools closed. The Albany Street Primary School was also closed, being -superseded by the new Intermediate School. The decrease of 318 in the roll number is due principally to the raising of the school age, but smaller families are also a contributing factor. The decrease in the average attendance is greater than the decrease in the roll number. This was to be expected by the spread of the measles epidemic to country districts and the prevalence of influenza, whooping cough, and mumps both in town and country,, stated a report presented at yesterday’s meeting of the Education Board.
Roll number at end of term 17,812 18.130 318 Average weekly 'roll number 17,832 18.128 296 Average .attendance ... 16,157 17,127 670 Percentage of attendance ... 92.39 91.18 2.09
