BALCLUTHA NOTES

(Prov Odr Own Correspondent.] Commissioner anil Mrs James Cunningham, leaders of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, who are at present on a farewell tour of the dominion .prior to leaving for South Africa, visited Balclntha on Tuesday, accompanied by Lieutenant-colonel Scotney, property secretary, and Major and Mrs Bear, divisional commanders, Dunedin. In the afternoon Mrs Cunningham spoke to a meeting of ladies, in the evening the local corps entertained the visitors at tea. and at night a public farewell was tendered the commissioner in the S.A. Hall. There was an excellent attendance, over which Mr P. M’Skiinming, M.P., presided. Short speeches wore made by the Chairman, Commandant Calcott, and Major Bear, the speakers all (laying tribute to tbo work done by Comniiss'oner and Mrs Cunningham during ibeir lour and a-balf years in the dominion The Commissioner and Mrs Cunningham also spoke and dealt with tile social work of the Army, expressed pleasure at having had the opportunity of serving in 'New Zealand, and regret at their departure. An cm joyable musical programme was interspersed between the speeches. The Stirling Dairy Factory Company has disposed of the balance of its cheese at ojd per lb through Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. Ltd. The quantity sold was forty-five tons. Last week the company sold forty-five tons at a similar figure through the National Mortgage Company. This price is said to be a record for Otago and Southland for this season. Over 350 entries have been rcco.ved for the Clntha Poultry Show, to be held this week. All poultry classes mro well represented, while a feature will he the canary and small birds section. Exhibitors are showing from all parts of Otago, Southland, and Canterbury. 'The second round of football fixtures commences in South Otago on Saturday. The present position is that in senior grade Toko, Crescent, and Clntha are all within a point of each other. In second grade Clntha Valley arc leading by 3 points from the nearest team, while in third grade High School has a 4 point lead. The representative match played hero last Saturday was disappointing from a plaving point, the South Otago team not showing up to expectations, while West Otago played well. There should ho several changes in the South Otago team to play Eastern Districts at Gore on Wednesday next. In the southern division in women's hockey, the Balclntha and -Stirling teams are level in points, and the f'-r-.h----coming matches in the division will ho watched with interest. The Princess Elizabeth Lodge, ALL held its first half-yearly meeting last night, there being a large attendance. The members of the Ald ton Past Grands’ Lodge carried out the installation of officers in a very efficient manner. The new officers are:—N.G., Sister N. M'Farlane ; V.G.. Sister M. Kalinin : E.S.. Sister M. 'Posh : warden, sister G. Colbert; guardian. Sister B. Jardine: G.M.. Bro. C. Murdoch. A game of cards, supper, and a dance concluded a successful meeting.
