DUNEDIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.
CONCERT TO-NIGHT The playing in toto o| Rimsky-Korsa-koft’s monumental symplioniu suite, ‘ Scheherazade,’ makes the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra’s concert _in the Concert Chamber to-night a unique occasion. The huge suite, in which unity of effect is obtained by the use of a multiplicity of detail, is a difficult task for any but a highly competent orchestra, and yet it is emphatically one of the richest programme items that could bo chosen, given that competence; so that symphony concert audiences who have admired M. de Rose’s stand against any cheap road to popularity will look forward with keen anticipation to this evening’s performance. Apart from the “ star ” item, the programme has been chosen to provide a maximum of variety, and the weaving of lighter compositions with heavier is deftly done to furnish a very delectable musical treat, the programme comprising Preludes to Acts I. and 111. of ‘ Lohengrin,” some of the richest excerpts from 1 Cavalleria Rusticana ’ (Mascagni), Moussorgsky’s gay fragment, ‘ Gopak,’ Godard’s exquisite ‘ Adagio Pathetique,’ and a Mendelssohn ‘ Scherzo.’ Moreover, the orchestra will collaborate with that accomplished pianist, Mrs B, It. Nees, in Cesar Franck’s splendid tour de force, ‘ Symphonic Variations.’ The vocal soloist, Miss Florence Pacey, will sing ‘ To the Angels ’ (Zardo), with ’cello obbligato_ by Mr L. E, Hunter, ‘Lament of Isis’ (Bantock), and the ‘ Valse Song ’ from Edward German’s 1 Tom Jones.’
