Dir D. Solomon travelled by train to-day from Dunedin to Christchurch. Dir C. AY. Rattray left this morning for Wellington. Dlajor Stanley Rice, of Wyndham, camo to town by this morning’s express. Dir Hugh Speight left to-day by the 11.35 train, and will be in Wellington to-morrow. Dir J. Binsted, loco engineer, went to Christchurch from Dunedin to-day. Mr and Mrs H. AY. Reid left Dunedin this morning for Tauranga. Dir E. Lomas was a passenger for Oamaru by the 11.35 train to-day. A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the election of a member of the Senate of the University of New Zealand by the General Court of Convocation to fill the vacancy, caused by the resignation of Dir C. M, Gilray resulted in the return of Dir J.B. Callan, K.C. The polling was as follows: Dir Callan 811 votes, Mr P. H. Campbell 137, Mr S. N. Ziman 580, informal 75. The following were the successful v candidates in the first-aid examination of the St. John Ambulance Association, held at North Dunedin on June 4:— Y. Barley, M. Binley, J. Bryan, E. 1)1 ox- - ham, M. Aitken, M. Davis, D. Dolphin, DI. Fox, K Gemmell, J. Maffey, DI, McDonald, K. O’Connell. J. Patrick, DI. Warren. Dr T. B. Hamilton conducted the examination. Dir Richard Penfold, aged 82, a wellknown resident of Oamaru, and a compositor on the staff of the 1 Oamaru Mail ’ for fifty-three years, died at his work this morning.—Press Association. At the meeting of the committee of the Otago Rugby Union last night, the president (Mr J'. Dlitchell) referred to the death k of Dir Charles Harris, a brother of Dir H. Harris (a member of the committee). Ho said the late Mr C. Harris was connected with the Star Club in its palmy days, when it was • one of the best junior teams that ever played in Otago. _ Personally he had been associated with the deceased.' and had always found him a thorough sport and a gentleman.
