Thousands of animals were slaughtered in the streets in propitiation of the goddess of smallpox, who refused to be appeased when 6,000 were thus sacrificed, on May 25. The streets reeked of blood, and the whole town presented a ghastly ap pearance. Carcases were everywhere'.
