RUGBY LEAGUE

EXECUTIVE MEETING A meeting of the Otago Rugby Football League was held last night, the president (Mr W. Holloway) being in the chair! The Chairman, referring to the progress of the game, said it was pleasing to report a vast improvement during the past few weeks. On Saturday two very attractive games were played, the four teams giving fine exhibitions of football. If the league continued to play games up to that standard the public would probably give the code better support. The executive had postponed criticism of the games until the present time, and the offici'als were now quite satisfied that the action taken recently in regard to encouraging players had been fully justified. Mr A. Eckhoff said that Saturday’s games certainly shewed a marked improvement, and although the standard was not as high as that seen in Auckland and other centres, it was attractive, and clean football. If the improvement were maintained the league would have every reason to be well satisfied. Sir F; Turnbull said that he was quite satisfied that the standard of play in the league games had greatly improved. The question of playing an interprovincial game in Dunedin this season was discussed. It was stated that there was a possibility of an Auckland representative team visiting the West Coast to play for the Northern Union Cup, and the opinion was expressed that an effort should be made to get this team to come to Dunedin, as its appearance would give a fillip to the game here.—lt was decided to write to the Auckland League and ask if it would be possible to send a representative team to Dunedin later in the season. A letter was received from the Dunedin Coursing Club, stating that it was proposed'to revive the sport of coursing in. the city, and asking for financial assistance.—lt was decided to make a grant of £1 Is to the club. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Christian Brothers v. Athletic, at Oval, 1.30 p.m. (referee, Mr W. Watts) ; City v. Pacific, at Oval (referee, Mr A. Eckhoff).
