DEFEATING SHIP CARGO THIEVES
One method of foiling cargo thieves is mentioned in the ‘ P.L.A. Monthly ’ for May. It is stated that “ When boots and shoes are shipped in America, it is customary to place half-pairs in each case By that I mean one case will contain all the right, boots and another will contain all the left boots, in an endeavour to defeat the pilferer.” The same writer also remarks:
“ If is a pleasure to watch a Chinaman stowing tea, for he appears to take an especial pride in it, and at the Pagoda Anchorage in the river Min I have seen them force a chest into a tier by running along the hold and falling on to it in a sitting posture rather than risk damage to the chest by using a crowbar.”
