ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

FATAL COMPLICATIONS. The death occurred at the Auckland hospital last night ,of J. Gillies, aged 26, .an assistant steward, who underwent an operation for appendicitis on the Monowai when the vessel was one days out from Sydney. The operation -was performed by the ship’s surgeon (Dr Boyd), while the chief officer (Mr White) administered the anaesthetic. The operation revealed that complications had developed. Gillies, whose home was in Dunedin, was taken to the hospital, where he was admitted in a serious condition. DANGEROUSLY ILL. A broken clavicle and extensive scalp wounds were’ suffered by Leslie Proud,who fell down the stairs at No. 4 Clark street, where he resides. When admitted to the hospital at 8.45, last night he was placed on the dangerously ill list. ELDERLY MAN’S DEATH, A widower named Gavin Brighton, seventy-nine years of age, was found dead in bed late on Thursday night at the residence of - bis son at St v Leonards. An inquest was held yesterday afternoon at St. Leonards before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M. Constable M'Quitty represented the police. Medical evidence was given by Dr. Barnett, who stated that he had attended tho deceased during the past few months. The coroner returned a verdict that the deceased met his death by accidental asphyxiation, no blame being attachable to anyone..
