HELPING THE BLIND.
TO THE EDITOU. Sir, —I have been very much interested in your correspondence for the past week in connection with a blind man selling writing pads, and it is quite pleasing to see that at least a few persons are prepared to stand by the blind. Mr Mackenzie says he has no objection to a blind man selling writing pads, so long as the article is of good quality and reasonably priced. I ask: Is Mr Mackenzie supplying this man with his pads, or is the institute in any way assisting this man? If not, then what right has Mr Mackenzie or anyone else to dictate as to quality and price? There is no doubt that the Jubilee Institute is very financial, otherwise I do not think Mr Mackenzie would be drawing £6OO per annum. Also, was it not on account of its strong financial position that the Government ceased its subsidy? I understand that Mr Mackenzie comes to Dunedin every year, but very little is known of his doings while here. I would therefore suggest that lie should call a public meeting and be prepared to answer questions put to him. There is no doubt that a blind man has a hard enough road to travel without Mr Mackenzie putting rocks in his path. It is a great pity that your correspondents do not make themselves acquainted with the blind of Dunedin, especially those who are striving to earn their own living. 1 feel sure they would learn much, and at the same time would show the blind that someone is interested in their welfare. —I am, etc., No Dictator.
