FIJIAN WOMAN TRICKS CHINESE MERCHANT [Pm United Press Association.] , - CHRISTCHURCH,- June 13. How a Fijian woman tricked a Cldnese merchant was explained in the Court this morning, when Materia Simmonds, aged thirty-seven, a domestic servant, pleaded guilty to the theft of silk garments, valued at £45, the property of Hop Yick Cheong. The chief detective said that, the accused went to the complainant’s shop, and said she had ; £IOO to spend on her daughter, jvho was about to be married. The Chinese parcelled up the silk, and then the woman said she felt sick. The complainant hastened to the back of the shop to get her a drink of water. ■[When he returned the woman was gone, and so was the silk. She was arrested later at New Brioditon. The accused was sentenced to six monthsj hard labour. She had previous convictions.
