OLD BOYS OVERWHELM ATHLETIC EXCELSIOR DEFEAT MAHEHO The North Otago competition games were advanced a further stage on Saturday when Old Boys gained an easy win over Athletic, and Excelsior defeated Maheno by 8 points to 3. Although. the day was line and clear a cold south-westerly wind made conditions most unpleasant for spectators and players alike. Consequently the attendance was not as large as usual. Oreat' interest was taken in the Old Boys-Athletic match, played on the Oval, and the spectators vociferously applauded any spectacular movement. Old Boys played the open game throughout, and had Athletic on the defence for the greater part of' the game. The Excelsior-Maheno match was a drab affair, and on the day’s play a draw would have been a good criterion. - OLD BOYS 20, ATHLETIC 3. Conditions were good for the match between Old Boys and Athletic. The match was not productive of a very high standard of football, the only bright Hashes coming from the Old Boys’ backs. Athletic obtained the ball from the majority of the scrums, but were unable to make use of the advantage. . Athletic (Maroon) won the toss, and Easton kicked off for Old Boys (Red). The Red forwards attacked, and a bad miss by Turvey let Frame over for a try. Easton’s kick fell short. The Reds again returned to the attack, and a free kick gave Easton a good chance to goal, but his kick again fell short. The Maroons then took a turn at attacking, but Macdonald and .Muirhead carried back play to Maroon territory. Turvey was penalised' for hanging on, and, Easton kicked an easy goal, making Old Boys 6, Athletic 0. , After scrambling play in midfield Timpero broke away, and sent on to Frame, to 'Cameron, who was pushed out at the corner. Maroons were penalised, and Easton missed an easy kick. • From a scramble on the twenty-five line Familtou broke away, and the ball went to Woods, who forced bis way’over, and Easton converted. Half-time was; then sounded with the scores: Old Boys 11, Athletic 0. On resuming the Maroons attacked, but the Red forwards drove them back. Easton picked up nicely, and, brushing off several weak tackles, passed to Luclemauu, who went over. Easton missed the kick. Maroons carried play into the Red twenty-five, where L. Park had an- easy chance to kick ,a penalty, but hiissed. Another easy chance- to goal was taken by Howell, but the ball went wide. Easton started a rush, the ball going to Familton, to Calder, to Ludemaun, back to Calder,; to Cameron, who went over behind, the posts, for. a good try. Easton hit the' crossbar with the kick. Athletic pressed hard, and R. Park was nearly over. Mason picked up and attempted a field goal, but the ball failed to rise. A rush led by Holland, L. Park, and Brown resulted'in Brown scoring. Park ’missed' the kick. The Maroons made several determined efforts to score, but the Red defence bold, Easton cleared, and from a forward rush Mulhern kicked through. Turvey fumbled, and Muirhead went over to score. Easton’s kick missed. The game then ended, the scores being:— ; Old Boys .... ... 20 Athletic ... ... 3 ■ Mr L. South controlled the game. EXCELSIOR S, MAHENO 3. Playing on No. 2 ground. Excelsior met Maheno in the last match of the second round of the competition for the Citizens’ Shield, and, after a game in which ’ the forwards practically dominated the play, ran out winners by 8 points to 3. The backs, on either side handled badly, while the, defence was poor. Knight was the most outstanding back on the field, and.made several fine openings. For. Maheno : the New-, land brothers and - Clark were’ always prominent. ’ Excelsior (Blue) kicked off with the wind in their favour, and after a .series of line-outs play centred found halfway for a time, until Maheno, by dint of good forward work, Took play to Blue territory. Maheno continued to attack, and for a period of fifteen minutes Excelsior were penned in their own twenty-five, defending desperately. Relief came when Dairey broke through and took play up field to Green territory, the ball going into touch at the twenty-five flag. From the line-out Knight sent, his backs away, but an infringement spoiled a ‘ good movement, and Clark cleared. From play in midfield J. Temper© secured, and .made a determined run down the side line, but his pass infield went astray. A Green man getting off-side resulted in Donaldson kicking a fine penalty goal. Excelsior 3, Maheno 0. _ * Maheno immediately attacked, and Excelsior bad to force down on four occasions before, Knight found touch between the twenty-five and halfway flags. Maheno. at this stage, were having the best of the play, but were unable to finish off their movements. Davey secured from loose play, and ran through to halfway before transferring to Stewart, to Donaldson, who lost possession when in a good position. From a scrum Knight again sent bis backs away, but Temper© was forced ouFm the corner. From the line-out Sim kicked through, and, supported by Newlands and,Sinclair, carried play to hallway. Half-time sounded shortly after, with Maheno attacking strongly. Shortly after resuming Davey put Excelsior in a good position with .an excellent line kick. Stewart secured and passed to Tompero, who in, turn passed to Wilson, the latter going over lor a good try. Donaldson made no mistake with the kick. Excelsior 8, Maheno 0. ’ ■ After a period of scrambling play, in which both sides .indulged in a great amount of unnecessary kicking, Newlands put in a spectacular run, but was forced into touch in Blue territory. An infringement, by the Blues when_ in front of their goal resulted in Mariion giving Maheno three points, with a penalty kick.- Excelsior 8, Maheno 3. . Excelsior, by adopting bustling tactics. bad the better of the exchanges for the next ten minutes of play, and although repeated attempts were made to open up the game lack of co-opera-tion, combined with faulty handling and bad passing, saw these attempts prove futile. Shortly before time Dougherty was prominent in a Green forward rush, the ball going out in the corner. ' Noside sounded with Maheno attacking, the scores remaining unchanged. Mr L.
