FREIGHT CUTTING POLICY
REPLY TO RAILWAYS MANAGER [Pan Ukimd Pum Amocutio*.] AUCKLAND, June 9. Replying to the statement of Mr G# H. Mackley, general manager of Railways, Mr Ernest Davis, chairman of directors of the Northern Steamship Company, says that it is true that at a conference held between the Harbours Association, the Ship, Owners’; Federation, and the Railways Hoard it, was agreed that the position was a ’ very difficult one, and that no solution had been reached for the simple reason that the Railways Board was not prepared to alter its freight-cutting policy, as affecting shipping. The board definitely laid it down that it would fix what freights it thought fit without regard to the injuiy to the existing shipping service. It was nonsense to suggest that the conference recognised that the pojicy of the Railways Board from a national point of view could not be fairly criticised. The deputation had waited on the board for that very purpose and expressed' its disappointment when it received the Railways Board’s reply.
