HOME WORK.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir. —The pronouncement by the British Medical Association, published in your columns last evening, in regard to the amount of home work which ought to be given to pupils in our secondary schools should cause grave heart searchings among some of the head masters. The statements that “ the B.M.A. is of the opinion that the amount of study outside School hours required from such pupils is excessive, and therefore prejudicial to their physical and mental welfare,” and “ we consider that two hours’ preparation at home work is the maximum which should he required of secondary school pupils,” should, surely, bring home to head masters the untold harm they are doing by insisting on pupils doing work far in excess of the time mentioned. The matter is so serious that the governing bodies of our secondary schools can no longer disregard it, but must take steps to see that the recommendations of the B.M.A. are carried out by the masters under their control. As parents now know r , v on the highest nthonty, dim the amount of home work_ now required “ is excessive and prejudicial to the physical and mental welfare of their childern,” a groat responsibility rests on them if they do not take such action as shall cause it to cease for nil time.—Health, and nob cram, must be the first consideration.—T am. etc,, Wake Ur. Parents. March 27.
