A Wellington Association message states that the Earl and Countess of Liverpool are passengers by the Remuera, arriving here to-morrow afternoon. They will be the guests of the Governor-General and Lady Alice I'crgusson. Admiral Sir Dudley de Chair (Governor of New South Wales) is on board the same vessel, with Lady and Miss Elaine de Chair. They will also stay at Government House. The ‘ Tablet ’ reports that on Christmas Dav, at the hands of Bishop Whyte, Mr J. J. Marlow received the Papal decoration of the Cross of Pope Leo NHL, “Pro Eccjesia ct Pontiface,'’ in recognition of his many services to the church. The bishop, in pinning the cross on the breast of Mi Marlow, mentioned the notable fact that ho had given three sons to the priesthood, two daughters to the Order of Sisters of Mercv, and one son to the Christian Brothers. He was also prominent in Hibernian and St. Vincent .do Paul Society activities and other Catholic works in the diocese. The medal was instituted by the late Pope Leo XIII. Its object is to reward those who in a general way deserve well of the Pope on account of services done for the church and its head. The death occurred at his residence at Caversham yesterday morning of Mr Alexander Cowie, one of the founders of the brewery firm of Messrs Cowie and Co., from which he retired about eight years ago. The deceased was born in Banff, Scotland, seventy-six years ago, and came to New Zealand as a hov of eight years in the ship Pladda. Throughout a long life in Dunedin Mr Cowie took a keen interest in sport and in acclimatisation matters. He was one of the oldest members of the Otago Acclimatisation Society, of which body ho had been president, and he was particular!v interested in the purchase of the Waitali site for Hie new hatchery to replace that at Clinton. He was a member of the Otago Cycling Club, and for many years acted as starter at Caledonian sports, lie was also one of the founders of the Dunedin Gun Club. He leaves a widow and six children —a son and live daughters, all of whom are married. Mr W. S. Littlejohn, at one lime principal of NelAn College, and now principal of 'Scotch College, Melbourne, arrived at Auckland by the Ulimaroa on Tuesday to spend Ins vacation in New Zealand. He has planned a fishing excursion in Otago, where ho will be joined later by Sir John MacFarlami, Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, and the Hev. Maerao Stewart, of Melbourne.
