DEPARTURE DELAYED

ELEANOR BOLING LOADING REPORTS FROM BASE SHIP Owing to a continuance of the heavy ice in the pack in the Ross Sea, the Byrd Antarctic ship Eleanor Boling will not now leave Dunedin for the base on the Barrier till January 10. This decision was reached yesterday, following receipt of radio communication from the baseship, City of New York. ' Yesterday, the barque was twelve miles away from Frnuhcim, Amundsen’s base at tile Bay of Whales. Commander Byrd and a party of twelve were still on the ice. The event of interest was the falling down a crevice of a dog team. The driver and the team was extricated without any suffering damage. The Boling is being loaded to-day. If necessary, she can be despatched for the Antarctic at a day’s notice. Her spare propeller is stored right for’ard, and in the main hatch is stowed the Ford car which will bo converted for ice purposes when the base is reached. The collier Opihi 'is alongside the Bolino- discharging 260 tons of coal. When the Boling leaves Dunedin sho will carry 350 tons of coal, all of which will be utilised for the trip to the ice and back to Dunedin. No coal is being taken for the City of New York. , iii Preparations are being made aboaul ship for a merry New Year’s Eye celebration and a holiday will he observed on the vessel to-morrow, as, Captain Brown points out. New Years Day is a big day for Americans.
