EX-SULTAN’S JEWELS
PURCHASED BY LONDON SYNDICATE A WONDERFUL COLLECTION. Press Aseocialvon—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, December 12. The Constantinople correspondent of the ‘ Daily News ’ states that a syndicate of London capitalists has entered into a bargain with the Turkish Government to purchase the cx-Sultan’s jewels, except those of historic interest. The price mentioned is £5,000,000. It is a wonderful collection, being the accumulation of centuries, and it was once valued at £300,000,000, which is generally regarded as exaggerated. Tiie most valuable items are the throne of Shah Ismail of Persia, a jewelled dagger of Mohammed, and a jewelled sword of Constantine, the Emperor of Byzantium. The Turkish Government in 1927 commissioned a Swiss jeweller to value the collection, and he said the task was impossible. In an underground vault he found tray upon tray piled with mixed loose stones of unbelievable size. It was recently rumoured that Kcmal Pasha intended to sell the jewels to improve the Turkish finances, and a Paris firm then valued portion of them at £20,000,000. —United Service.
