BIG BRIGADE CAMP

HOWITZER CO-OPERATION [Special to the ‘ Stak.’J CJTRISTGHURCII, December 12. The Ist Battalion of the Canterbury .Regiment, the Ist Battalion of the Otago Regiment, and the 16th Battery (6.7 howitzers) will be in camp together at Waiauakarua (about twentyfive miles south of Oamarn) next March. This will be tbo first occasion since the war that units of any si/.e have been brigaded in camp, and the scheme is proving popular. An almost ideal location lias been selected as the camp site, being a piece of flat country between the railway and the sea, on the banks of thcWaianakarna stream. .from a military point of view the camp will be of much greater benefit to the men than previous camps held at Burnham. for tactical'exercises the country will present fresh problems, for, as far as Canterbury is concerned, every possible scheme has been worked out at Burnham, and tbo officers and men know almost every tussock there. The Kith Battery is armed with howitzers, which arc used for close support work with infantry, and it is expected that at Wainakanm the battery will bo working in conjunction with the two infantry battalions on tactical exercises. thus giving all ranks an opportunity of learning the value of cooperation, especially on hilly country such ns is found in that district. The country will also be fresh to the Otago Battalion, for previously it lias done its camps at Malarac, in Central Otago. Camp will cominenc.j on March ■>, and continue until March 12. Advance parties from all units will go into camp a few days ahead nl (lie main bodies fo prepare for their reception.
