CHRISTMAS MUSIC

ST, MATTHEW'S CHURCH SERVICES The approach of Christmas 'yas hoi - aided by a special service in bt. Matthew’s ‘Church last evening, when a line selection of the music that is inseparably associated with Christinas was heard. The singing of the choir, which was augmented for the occasion, enhanced the beauty of the music, and was thoroughly enjoyable in every respect. The principal work of the evening was Munro’s carol-cantata, Light of Light.’ This was 4 accorded extremely dignified treatment, and the air of mysticism pervading the music was nicely exemplified. The whole rendering was one of manifest conviction, lor the choir showed a keen appreciation of the undoubted musical value of the cantata. Several of the familiar and very beautiful Christmas carols and hymns wore sung, and the fervent atmosphere was strikingly sustained by both choir and soloists, the choir was well balanced, and tbo singing was colourful and expressive. Some outstanding work was done by tbo soloists, all of whom sang with great leoling and sincerity. The sweet voices of tlie. boy ehoristers were particularly pleasing. The musical service was directed by Mr Axel Newton, the organist of the church. An offertory was taken up in aid of the choir funds, and a generous response was made by ,he largo congregation.
