TITLE TO OPERA
AMATEUR PRODUCTION OF ‘MIKADO’ WILLIAMSONS' OBTAIN INTERIM INJUNCTION [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, March 2. Mr Justice M‘Gregor has granted an interim injunction restraining the Te Kuiti Amateur Operatic Society from producing ‘ The Mikado ’ on Monday night at Cambridge. Tiie plaintiffs-were Bert Royle, theatrical manager, H. T. Sullivan, of Devonshire, England, and J. C. Williamson, Ltd. The motion was asked for on the ground that the defendant society, in infringement of copyright, and without the license of plaintiffs, had given public performances of some of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operas, and had advertised a performance of the ‘ Mikado ’ at Cambridge.
Counsel said the matter was of the greatest importance to the Williamson people, who were suing for damages for past performances, and were seeking a permanent injunction. The Operatic Society was defiant, and disputed the title.
