SEA CAPTAIN ASSAULTED
DOh'KEYMAN CHARGED
SENTENCED TO SIX WEEKS’ IMPRISONMENT.

WELLINGTON, March 2
William John Morgan, a donkeyman on the ship Highgate, from San Pedro to Wellington, was to-day charged with continued wilful neglect of duty on the high seas, and with having’assaulted Captain Stubbs by attempting to strike him with a shovel. The evidence was that the defendant complained of being ill. Ho received such attention as was available. Afterwards the captain and officers were satisfied that he was malingering. His services were required in the stokehold, and owing to his conduct the ship had lost a day cm the voyage. The story of attempted assault was that the skipper went to the stokehold to complain of the accused letting the steam pressure drop, and the accused, with a shovel, threatened to murder him if he did not leave. The magistrate took a serious view of the assault. He said that it was assault in law because the accused had it in his power to carry out the threat. The sentence was six weeks’ imprisonment on each charge, concurrent.:
