HIBERNIAN CLUB
HALF-YEARLY MEETING The Dunedin Hibernian Social and Debating Club held its fifth half-yearly general meeting tho other evening in the club rooms, Moran Buildings, Octagon. A large and enthusiastic attendeneo of members was presided over by the president (Mr A. Gillick). His lordship tho Right Rev. Dr Why to, the Rev. Father Tylee, and Dr Greenslado honored (he meeting with their presence. Tho President, after welcoming the bishop and others present, especially thanked his lordship for his continued and valued support and his keen interest in the welfare and activities of tho club; and also those gentlemen who gave their services as lecturers, the Rev. Father Collins (administrator), Mr J. Kennedy, Mr J. J. Wilson having given very interesting and highly appreciated lectures. The President, reviewing the activities of the club during the past year, referred to the outing the past year, referred to the outstanding success achieved at the Dunedin Competitions Society’s annual contests, when Mr J. Gxindley secured first place and Mr R. Thompson second place in their respective sections of the impromptu speeches, while tho other club members had also acquitted themselves well. The President made special reference to the successful public performances that bad been staged, and social gatherings hold. On these later occasions much valued help had been given by the members of tho St. Joseph’s Ladies’ Club, whose efforts in. this direction were recognised by an “ evening ” being arranged for their entertainment. A prize of £1 donated to tho Christian Brothers’ School fund was won by Master I’. Devereux for his part in the trial scene of * The Merchant of Venice,’ staged at the annual break-up concert. The statement of accounts showed the receipts as amounting to £136 8s Id, and the credit balance to £ls 7s 7d, the balance of assets over liabilities being £lO2 Is sd. The president concluded bis remarks by stressing the fact that the facilities offered by the club might be availed of to a far greater extent by Catholic men of the city, and expressed the hoi>e that the membership roll would in the near future show a satisfactory increase. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing term; —Patron, His Lordship the Rt. Rev. Dr Whyte; president, Mr A. Gillick; vice-president, Mr A. J. Dowling; treasurer, Mr J. Boyle (all re-elected unopposed) ; secretary, Mr G. C. Corston: assistantsecretary, Mr R. I*rascr; committee—Messrs J. N. Smith, A. Sullivan, J. Ryan, P. Nash, P. Walsh, J. Beard, A. L. Curry, F. Brown; auditors, Messrs R. Thompson and J. Beard. The Bishop, in addressing the meeting emphasised the importance oi boys who had left school becoming associated with such a club, where they would acquire the art of public speaking, ami also benefit themselves in many other ways. Study and research and honest effort to do one’s best, regularity in attendance, cheerful acceptance or positions, and a share oi all the duties would be tho keynote to the success of tho club. His Lordship concluded a helpful address by wishing the club every success. The Rev. Father Tylee also addressed the gathering. Tho first syllabus item of the Halfyear was held in tho club rooms latei, when a keenly-contested and interesting debate on the subject ‘ That Literature Has Conferred Greater Benefit on Mankind than Science.’ took place. Another successful “club evening was held, and took tho form of ‘ impromptu speaking.”
