NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING OPENED AT TRENTHAM [Peb United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 23. Beautiful weather prevailed at Trenthaiu this morning, when the National Ilille Association’s meeting opened with the service matches. The entries number 351, being eight more than last year. On account of the daylight saving, the men were not squadded till 8.30, due to the light being unsatisfactory. Colonel U. Hughes (president of the association) welcomed the Australians, stating that the interchange of visits broadened the vision and made for comradeship. Ho trusted that a team would bo sent trom New Zealand next year to compote for the Gordon Highlander Trophy, and to that end the association would do its utmost to interest the Defence Department and the Government in the object. He assured the visitors tha they would get a real insight into what “ fishtail ” really was, as the vagaries ol the wind at Trentliam had no parallel in Australia. ' Colonel F. B. Cresswcll added words of welcome and made lecliug reference to the esteemed comrades who had passed away since the last national meeting, notably Captain F. Hood aad To Whaiti.

Another well-known King’s Pmemaii arrived in camp this morning in Colonel E. R. Smith, who was successful m 1894.
