APPEARANCE OF OLYMPIC CYCLISTS

Wednesday night will be a night of nights so far as amateur athletics in Dunedin are concerned, for on that date there will appear at the Caledonian Ground the two greatest cyclists that have visited New Zealand since the war—J. Standen and D. j Gray, the Australian champions, both lof whom have been chosen represent their country at the Olympic Games. I Standen is said to bo one or the finest I cyclists Australia has ever produced, and just how good he is may be gauged I from the fact that he .recently defeated : the great speedster, “Fatty” Lajnb, who appeared in Dunedin last season. ! The race of the evening _ wifi be the ■ scratch event over one mile, in which ! the best of the local riders will also be seen in action. Splendid fields are assured, among the competitors being S. Bremford, the Otago champion, who has improved out of sight this season. E. Palmer, the ex-professional rider who has been showing splendid form of late; P. Traill, J. Fogarty, W. J. Templeton, and several others. In addition to the cyclists a programme of running events and a hop, step, and jump will be staged. In the latter event R. O. Johnstone, the New Zealand representative, will appear. Johnson is the best man at this event Otago , has yet produced, and he is striving his utmost at the present time to reach forty-six feet. All the best talent in Dunedin will be seen on the track, and the mile relay handicap of 440 yards should provide a thrilling struggle. Tho visiting Australian riders will arrive here by the first express from Christchurch on Monday, and during their stay will he quartered at the Criterion Hotel. An extensive entertainment programme has been arranged for their benefit, and they will ho the guests of the Otago Amateur*Cycling Club one evening. They will make their speond appearance on the Saturday night.
