INTO CAMP!

IST BATTALION, OTAGO REGIMENT TO GO UNDER CANVAS NEXT WEEK On Thursday next, the Ist Battalion, Otago Regiment, will go into camp_ at Matarae to undergo its annual training. All the arrangements are well forward, and little remains to be done when the one thousand odd men arrive. Lieutenant-coolnel H. E. Barrowclough, D. 5.0., M.C., officer commanding the regiment, will be in charge of the camp, and he will have the following officers with him;—Major A. _S. falconer, D. 5.0., M.C., second in command; Captain S. M. Satterthwaite, N. adjutant; Captain S. G. M'Donald, M.C., assistant adjutant; Major J. MTherson, 0.8. E., O.C. A Company; Major W. Widdowson, M.C., O. B Company; Captain J. A. Roy, M.C.. O.C. C Company; Captain P. Spiers, M.C.. O.C. D Company: and Captain J. J. Kernohan, O.C. Headquarters wing. Major P. M'Kenzio will be battalion quarter-master, while the administrative section will be in charge of Captain R. S. Orr. Lieutenants E. G. Gedge, M.C., and M. D. Harvey will be the signal officers, and Captain J. Kernohan will bo machiimgtm officer. In camp with the battalion will be the Otago University Company of the N-Z. Medical Corps, under the command of Colonel C. E. Hercus, D. 5.0., 0.8. E. This unit was formed with the intention of training fourth and fifth year medical and dental students to be medical officers, and opportunities will bo given them gain experience under conditions as near as possible to those prevailing on active service.

An advance party, coni posed of C Company, the Otago University Company, N.Z.M.C., and the pioneer section of headquarters Aving, Avill leave on Monday next in order to commence training, and to have the camp in readiness before the main body of troops ararrives on Thursday. As usual, the officer commanding will make the training ns interesting as possible, and in order to attain this end a fairly comprehensive syllabus has been draAvn up, comprising battlo drill and field firing, and concluding Avith a tAvoday “ stunt ” in which the battalion will be supposed to bo a portion of a force marching down from Middlemarch and meeting enemy opposition in the vicinity of Sutton.

The leisure hours of the men will be made more enjoyable through the agency of the Y.M.C.A., which will erect a marquee, while a regimental canteen will he opened, and a camp post office established. The final afternoon in camp has been set aside for a sports meeting, which will be conducted on rather novel lines.

The camp will be thrown open on the Sunday, and arrangements have been made for those who desire to pay a visit to be supplied Avith hot water, tea, and sugar. Tire officer commanding will Avelcome all Avho are desirous of seeing the camp and gaining first-hand information of the conditions prevailing. A clay road runs right to the camp site, and in dry weather motor vehicles can be driven right into camp.
