Apart from any inquiry made by the Union Steamship Company into the recent incident in Cook Strait between tho steamers Maunganui and Tamahine, which resulted in the disratement of both captains, the whole matter has been the_ subject of investigation by the Marine Department from the time when it was first _ brought under the notice of the officials. Instructions were issued for reports to be obtained from the captains, and it is understood that these will be in the bands of the department to-day.
