LOCAL AND GENERAL

On Sunday the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band, in'full force, under Drummajor Gilchrist, visited Seacliff, and, under the direction of Mr Gumming, the patients’ friend, went round every department of the institution, giving in all something like eight distinct concerts, to the delight of the patients and staff. They certainly worked hard, and well deserved the thanks of the people so ably expressed by the acting head attendant, Mr Beasley. Mr Gumming, on behalf of the Patients and Prisoners’ Aid Society, also thanked the band, and invited them to make their visit an annual one. Last night the Waitati Mental Hospital had its annual‘visit from Mr George Beath and party, which included Mr A. Pettit at the piano, Mr G ; Beath (violin), and Mr ’R. Watson (clarinet). Comic sings in character were given by Mr G. Wiseman. Smgs were also given by Miss Pearl O’Neill, Messrs H. Griffiths and J. Ilodgers. Miss Mavis Smith was the elocutionist, while Miss G. Fox gave some excellent dances. It was an excellent programme, and a great treat to the patients. The concert was followed by a dance, which is always pleasing to the patients. Mr Bam bury, head attendant, and Mr Gumming thanked Mr Beath and his assistants for the happy evening.
