“FAG”-ENDS

SOiME ASTONISHING FIGURES £I,OOO A DAY THROWN AWAY (Contributed.) The population of New Zealand is approximately one and a-quarter millions. Perhaps we shall bo guessing moderately if we say that 200,000 New Zealanders smoko cigarettes. Of every cigarette smoked, let us say that onefifth is thrown away. In other words, .two cigarettes out of every ten, “tailor-made” or otherwise, are wasted. Now, tho average cigarette smoker gets through at least ten cigarettes in a day. So we reach the astounding ■'conclusion that 400,000 whole cigarettes are thrown away in New Zealand alone every day! Splitting tho difference between “tailor-mades” and the “amateur” variety, and reckoning the average cost of ten cigarettes at Cd, we find that New Zealand scenery is being daily plastered with £1,000! A more knowledgable calculation of the waste in tobacco would no doubt place the figure higher, but it is surprising enough as we have it. lu Great Britain smokers of cigarettes number about 9,000,000. The fact that their cigarettes arc cheaper is balanced by the tendency to smoke more on that account, and also by the fact that practically no smoker, rolls his own smokes, so we may well calculate for Britain as we did for New Zealand. We find that Britain throws away £45,000 every day. £16,425,000 per annum! Truly, the streets are paved with gold.
