The mayor (Mr W. R. Taverner) travelled to Wellington to-day, and will return on Saturday. The Hon. J. A. Hanon, Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., ami Messrs W. J. Morrell and T. R. Fleming left for Christchurch to-day to attend a meeting ol the New Zealand University Council. Mr R. A. Anderson passed through from Invercargill this morning on his way north. At the meeting of the University Council yesterday Professor Park was granted leave of absence to enable him to visit England this year. Proposals by Professor Park for carrying on his duties during his absence were approved. , , , Mrs J. J. M'Leunnu loit by the second express yesterday on a visit to tho North Island. At yesterday’s meeting of the University Council the Chancellor (Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P.) referred in feeling terms to the death of Miss Gladys Cameron, and moved—“ That the council of the University of Otago expresses its deep sorrow on learning of the death of Miss Gladys Christian Mary Cameron. Miss Cameron was a distinguished student of the University of Otago, where she obtained the degrees of M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Homo Science, together with other distinctions. In 1917 she was appointed assistant to tho professor of bacteriology, a position which she occupied with great success until at tho end of 1926 she was compelled through iil-hcaltb to .resign her post. To Miss Cameron’s relatives the council expresses its most sincere sympathy.” Tho motion was carried, the members standing for a few moments in silence. Recent arrivals at the Grand Hotel include Misses Lassell (2, Egypt), Mr L. E. Kalker (London), Messrs E. C. M'Grath and Mr M. Marks (Sydney), Messrs J. Martin, M. C. Walker, and W. Esson (Wellington), Mr W. S. Smart (Timani), ami Mr and Mrs E. A. P.igeon (Gore). New guests to tho Excelsior Hotel include Mr W. G. O. Attwood (London), Captain and Mrs Barrington (Sydney), Messrs W. H. Holmfield and E. V. Eddy (Australia), Mr J. A. Gilmour (Wellington), Messrs W. Austin and J. W. Thomas (Christchurch), Mr W. L. Smith (Oamaru), Mr H. F, Tibhits and Ur Sutherland (Alexandra).

Among the latest visitors to tho City Hotel are Mr and Mrs C. East and Mr Russell Taylor (Sydney), Mr and Mrs H. G. Hichen, and Mr W. Hichen (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs M'Douall (Oamaru), and members of the Melbourne bowling team.
