UNIVERSITY APPOINTMENT

At the meeting of the Otago University Council yesterday afternoon, Mr Allen Arthur Orton, 8.A., M.Sc., who is at present assistant lecturer in mathematics and physics in the University of Western Australia, was appointed assistant to Professor R. J. F. Bell (professor of mathematics). Mr Orton, who is thirty years of age, obtained his B.A. degree in 1920, with philosophy as his major subject, and the degree of B.Sc. two years earlier, with final honors in the school of mathematics. Altogether he received four years’ training in pure mathematics (covering the full honors course), and three years in applied mathematics. Subsequently, on being appointed to his present position on the university-staff, he spent several years working on a lino of research in applied mathematics, as a result of which he was awarded tho degree of M.Sc. in 1925, for a thesis on “ Generalised Co-ordinates and their Application to Mechanical Problems.” In addition to his university degrees he holds a trained teacher’s certificate, os a result of having spent a full period of training in teaching method at the Teachers’ Training College, Claremont, W.A. During the past nine years he lias had considerable experience in teaching and lecturing in the service of the Education Department of Western Australia (three years), and on the staff of the University of Western Australia (six years). After a period on the staff of the Eastern Goldfields’ High School, Kalgoovlie, in 1919, he was appointed a lecturer at the Teachers’ Training College, Claremont, where he was responsible for the lecture work in mathematics and physics. In 1921 he topk up the position of assistant lecturer in mathematics and physics at tho University, of Western Australia, and in that capacity has had considerable experience of lecture work in different branches of mathematics, under the direction of the professor in charge of the department.
