CRICKET

LOCAL MATCHES

bowlers have a day out The heavy rain which fell on Friday night affected tho wickets on the North Ground—where both senior matches were played—and _ gave a chance to get their own back. The Grange wicket was particularly tricky, and the scores in the match between the home team and Dunedin were very low. Alloo came out with excellent figures, his analysis reading; 25.4 overs, 15 maidens, 27 runs, 7 wickets. Glaridge and Torrance also did good work for Dunedin. In the other match Dickinson, showing improved form with tho ball, took six Albion wickets for 48. It will be seen that both matches are at an interesting stage nud should provide good finishes next Saturday. Stumps were drawn at 6 p.m. to enable cricketers to attend tho carnival at Carisbrook. A notable performance in junior grade cricket was that by Aitken, of Carisbrook D team, who in the second grade (B section; match took four Y.M.C.A. wickets with four consecutive balls. GRANGE v. DUNEDIN.

Batsmen had anything but a happy time on tho Grange wicket, upon which, the match between Grange and Dunedin was played. Dunedin batted first, opening with R. Cherry and Cavanagh. The former began nicely, but tad reached only 8 when ho was caught off Alloo. I—B—lo. C. Ritchie followed, only to bo run out without scoring. 2—0—12. N. Cherry then came in, and, showing good form, was settling well down to it when ho was sent back to tho pavilion on a. '* run out” decision; it must have been a very close thing. B—lo —2B. Two inns later Cavanagh, who had batted almost an hour for 4 runs, was caught in ihe slips off a bumpy one. 4—4—30. Another disaster followed when T. Ritoiiie came in, scored 3, and was out in a similar way to Cavanagh Five wickets wore now down for 33, hut Torrance, who filled the gap, realised that the careful game was not the correct one for the occasion, and hit out manfully. He was specially severe on Oonradi, scoring a 6 and four 4’s off two successive overs from that bowler. M'Gregor was playing steadily the other end, but Torrance was first to go, stumped in trying a big hit off Alloo. 6—31—70. M'Gregor followed, caught, before any addition was made to the score, and Sinclair added only a single. Claridge and White succeeded in each adding a modest but very useful double-figure score, and tho total exceeded tho hundred by 3 runs. Alloo bowled right through the innings. Knight and Conradi opened' the innings for Grange, but tho latter, never comfortable on the bumpy pitch, was caught in the slips off Torrance. I—o —3. M'Mullan followed, and, with Knight, settled down to score steadily. Knight was laying on tho wood and playing good forcing cricket. The pair took the .score to 49, when Knight was well caught by M'Gregor, who ran some distance before taking the catch. 2 35—49. M'Mullan was caught in the slips off Claridge, who had relieved Torrance, and Alloo came in. Wickets then began to fail, and seven were down for 59, but Chadwick and Hamm stemmed the tide, and were still _in when time was called, the total being 77. Scores: — DUNEDIN. First Innings. R. Albion, who are leading for the senior shield, met Carisbrook on the North Ground, the wicket being heavy and slow after the previous night’s rain. Batting first, Albion opened with Duncan and Vorrath, but the latter had scored only 3 when a good ball from Dickinson clean bowled him. I—3—6. Blair was next, and he and Duncan, batting nicely, took the score to 41, when Dickinson got a swinger past Duncan and into his sticks. 2—l S—ll. Shepherd came in, and played carefully, this being necessary, for Dickinson was lifting in nasty fashion. Gradually tho score was taken to 70, when Faulks, who had gone on at the south end, clean bowled Shepherd with a beauty. 3—14—70. Caskio was next, but soon lost Blair, who had batted freely for 32 before being held in the slips. Barron and Caskie rattled on the runs, Caskie hitting lustily, and tho tally was 122 when Dickinson once more got in a good one and scattered Barron’s stumps. 5—18—122. After the tea adjournment, Allen was out without scoring, and Binnie soon followed, splendidly caught by Douglas one-handed in the slips off Dickinson. The end soon came, Caskie, after playing a forceful and useful knock for 47, being taken by Douglas, while Wilson was caught behind the wickets, and Simmers taken in slips (Douglas’s fourth catch in the innings), the side being all out for 148, Dickinson bowled well.

Blunt and Gourlcy opened for Carishrook, but the champion, after making 6, was caught and boweld in trying to hit a very short one from Blair. Dickinson hit hard, and was twice missed, but he was eventually badly run out. Smith and Courier played out time, the score being 51 for two wickets.
