LAWN TENNIS

FRANCE v. AUSTRALIA. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, February 9. The tests between France and Australia ,wero commenced in fine, sultry weather. In the singles Borotra beat Hopman, 2- 6-1, 6-3; Brugnon beat Crawford, 3- 7-5, 6-5. In his match against Hopman Borotra started off uncertainly, not playing with his usual dash. He seemed worried by the flies and a cross wind, but in the second set , ho gauged the strength of his opponent, and made more determined rushes to the net, continually forcing Hopman on the defensive. As the game progressed it grew faster, Borotra crowding on the pace and volleying and smashing with great vigor, Hopman’s speed was also very fast, and his pass-

ing shots were so accurate that they often kept Borotra back from the net. Both Brugnon and Crawford played carefully, hut there were some sparkliug rallies. Many of Crawford's shots went astray, and the Australian seemed to lack control towards the finish, the Frenchman outplaying him. In the doubles Patterson and O’Hara Wood beat Borotra and Boussus, 6-4, 6-2.
