Mr H. L, Tapley, M.l'., wrote to the meeting of the City Council last night resigning from oflioo as a sinking fund commissioner, ns ho was leaving tor England, and would bo absent for six months. The major (Mr W. B. Taverner) said Mr Tapley had taken a keen and live interest in the affairs of the commission for a. period of five years, lie would like to say how highly Mr Tapley’s services were appreciated. He suggested that the matter be referred to Ihe Finance Committee, as he understood that Mr D. B. Theomin (a former commissioner) was returning to New Zealand about March, The resignation was referred to the Finance Com mi (lee.
The Rev. David Calder, 8.A., Who, accompanied by Mrs Calder, was to leave ■Wellington to-day for Palestine and London, was entertained at luncheon yesterday by members of the Dominion Council of the British and Foreign Bible Society, of which he is general secretary. There were about twenty persons present, including representatives from the four dominion centres. Mr (3. A. Troup (the mayor), who presided,.welcomed tho members from the other centres, saying that while in Palestine Mr Calder would act as a Now Zealand representative on the International Mission Council. Later, in London, he would do work in connection with the British and Foreign Bible Society. On. behalf of those present, he presented Mr Calder with a camera in a leather case. T Mr G. .1. Anderson (Minister of Labor and Minister of Mines) passed through Dunedin by the first express from tho north yesterday on his way to Gore. Ho will return lo Wellington towards the end of next week. Mr T. R. Bavin (Premier of New South Wales) and parly arrived at Queenstown from Wanaka yesterday afternoon. They are due in Dunedin this evening. The Mayor of Dunedin, Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., and a number of other representative citizens said good-bye this morning on (he railway station to Mr W. Forgan Smith and his part}', who left by the 11.34 train, intending to visit Christchurch and Wellington, and leave for Queensland to-mor-row week. Mr H. L. Tapley, M.P., was tendered all sorts of good wishes by the mayor and many citizens as ho entrained for the north to-day to embark on the Aorangi and go for a six months’ holiday. Mr Guy Tapley accompanies his father as far as Auckland. . Mr W. A. Hayward, M.Sc., of Otago University, left Dunedin this morning for England, where ho intends to continue his studios in industrial chemistry and chemical engineering at the Ramsay Laboratories, London University. Mr Alfred Levi, who holds the M.Bv. degree of tho Otago University, left this morning for England, where ho will continue his science studies and rejoin his mother, Mrs Blanche Levi, whom he lias not scon for fifteen years. Recent arrivals to tho Grand Hotel include Mr and Mrs Degenhnrdt, Miss Degenhardt, Mr and Mrs Yoldiiam, Miss Yeldham (Sydney), Mr and Mrs H. Lewis (Adelaide), Mr K. Imisou (Melbourne), Miss V.
