SITUATION AT HANKOW UPRISING OF EXTREMISTS FEARED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SHANGHAI, September 12. (Received September 13, at noon.) Fears of an uprising of extremists have resulted in strict martial law being enforce:! in Hankow. All Chinese arc prohibited from appearing in the streets of the native cpiartcr, where trouble is expected owing to the absence of the main Hankow armies, which are participating in the Nationalists’ resumed drive towards Sliangtung, which is reported to be progressing in their favor. The Chinese authorities in Hankow advised the Trench municipality to bairicado the concession, and French marines landed and are picketing the concession. Several minor fracas occurred between the military and the Communists, also a number ol stabbiugs and bomb-throwing, causing a few casualties.
The military are patrolling the streets in full strength, dealing harshly with agitators. It is considered that the foreign naval forces in Hankow are sufficient to meet the worst situation that may arise.
