SCHNEIDER CUP
INTERNATIONAL AIR RACE MISHAP TO BRITISH MACHINE. (British Official Nows.) Press Association—By Wireless—Copy right. RUGBY, September 12. (Received September 13, at noon.) Ono of the British seaplanes which were sent to Venice by I lie Air Ministry to attempt to win tho Schneider Cup has met with a mishap. During a trial flight the machine, a short Bristol Crusader, crashed into the sea. The pilot, Flying-officci Schofield, was injured about the eyes. Efforts are being made to raise the seaplane, which is under the water. Great Britain has two other types of machines engaged for the race, a supermarine Napier and a Gloster-Napier. Both are widely differing in type from the Crusader. Ono of these, which took part in the same trial as the Crusader and was piloted by Squadronleader Skitter, isreported to nave attained the sensational speed of Sl2 miles -per hour, though this lucks official confirmation. Much was expected of tho Crusader. Apart from its sti iking design, it is remarkable for the introduction of an air-coolcd tigiuo for tho first time in competition. Iho Bristol Company produced a new end exceptionally powerful typo rf e.iginc called the Alcrcnry, and with very cmsiilcrablc interest tho contest between it and tho water-cooled Napier-Lions was being awaited. Tins Crusader had done much siueessful Hying in this country before king shipped to Venice, and it possessed a speed greater than that at which the race was won last year by tho Italians.
