OCTAGON The story of ‘ The Fourth Comma ndmcnt,’ which is being screened at the Octagon Theatre, covers a period of several years, and the various characters traverse the span between youth and old age. The subsequent transformations on the part of the cast are triumphs of make-up. Belle Bennett enters the story a young girl, and successfully grows older as the story unfolds. In the final fade-out she is magnificent in the disillusionment of fiftyWhen the story opens Mary Carr is seen as a mother in her twenties. Her son is four. The real Mary Carr is the mother of six, the eldest is over twenty, yet she appears very youthful in the picture- Again in a later sequence she is seen as an old grandmother, weary and feeble. June Marlowe likewise proves her ability to portray difficult character roles. Her story in the picture parallels that of Miss Bennett, and demands the same ago change. Make-up is thus the face costume of the screen, and is one of the most important details of brilliant character delineation. Among the supporting cast are Robert Aguew, June Marlowe. Frank Elliott, Kathleen Myers, Brady Kilne, and four-year-old Wendell Phillips Franklin. ‘ The Fourth Commandment ’ is from an original photoplay by Emilie Johnson, As an additional attraction to-night and to-morrow Mrs G. Sandford will give a short illustrated lecture on her adventurous trip across Australia by car. EMPIRE Eddie Cantor, who has the title role in ‘ Kid Boots,’ is making as great a success of his screen acting as he did of his stage Work. The greater part of ‘ Kid Boots ’ is set at a fashionable holiday resort, where Clara, Bow has the part of a swimming instructress, who falls in love with Cantor. Lawrence Gray is seen as a golf professional, and Billie Dove, who has the part of the hotel proprietor’s i«uighter, falls in love with him. The love entanglement between these two couples, with the comedy supplied by Cantor and Hank Mann, makes this production one of the most hilarious. The story deals with the attempts of Lawrence Gray’s wife, whom ho is trying to divorce, to have the divorce broken off when her erstwhile husband inherits a fortune. Through the intervention of Eddie Cantor, however, this attempt is frustrated. Later, when they meet and fall in We with two girls, complications in. The scheming wife is finally outwitted, however, and the romances between the two girls continue successfully. EVERYBODY'S AND KING EDWARD Conrad Nagel will be seen in his best film rola in Josef Von Sternberg’s ‘The Exquisite Sinner.’ now being shown at Everybody’s and King Edward Theatres. His work as the vagabond in ‘The Exquisite Sinner’ stamps him ns one of the really romantic characters of the screen, and will win him thousands of additional film followers. As the highly temperamental artist who joins a roving band of gypsies in an attempt to escape the conventions of society, lie does the best work of his career. In this picture he has. moreover, an excellent foil in Renee Adoree, whose work in ‘The Big Parade ’ and ‘La Boheme ’ lias won her national acclaim ‘Three Hours’ is also showing, and features Corinne Griffith and 'Hobart Rosworth in tbo leading roles. PLAZA AND GRAND ‘ Hands across tbo Border,’ one oi the attractions at the Plaza, and Grand Theatres, is a vigorous story, of the adventures of a youth raised in the East omit* luxurious surroundings of smart country clubs and drawingrooms. He goes West on a mission for his father, and fights his way to triumph against overwhelming odds, thereby proving conclusively that a youth reared in luxury need not be weak and snobbish. There is a world of fastaction melodrama, with Fred. Thomson and Silver King always in the forefront. Tom Mix and his wonder! ul horse Tony, with Dorothy Dwan in the leading feminine role, are the featured players in ‘ The Great, K. and A. Train Robbery.’ which is also showing. QUEEN’S The laugh-provoking couple, Bebo Daniels and Chester Conklin, are the featured stars in ‘A Kiss in a Taxi, Paramount’s newest French 1 a rce, showing at the Queen’s Theatre. A Kiss in a Taxi ’ is the first picture Bcbe and Chester have appeared in together in spite of the fact that both are long residents of the film colony, and got their start on the comedy lots. Tins rollicking farce was adapted by Dons Anderson from the stage play of the same name. Douglas Gilmore plays the. romantic lead. Henry Kolker, Richard Tucker, Eulalio Jensen, and Agostino Borgato are in the supporting cast.
