HIGH SCHOOLS' GOVERNORS.
Tile High Schools' Board of Governors met yesterday afternoon ; present—Hon. T Fergus (chairman), Messrs J. Wilson, G. C. Israel, J. M. Gallawav, and L. W. Harris. Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., wrote apologising for absence, and applying for leave of absence during the (region of Parliament.—Leave granted. Miss Alexander wrote thaiuking the board for appointing her to the position of viceprincipal at the Girls' High School.—Mr G. C. Israel wrote expressing thanks for his election as a representative of the secondary schools on the University Council.—The letters wcr« received. —Reports.— The Rector of the Boys' High School reported as follows:—"I have to report that the total number of pupils on the school roll is at present 322, including 91 seniors, 202 juniors, and 29 paying pupils. These numbers include one junior free pupil. A. L. Durrand, absent for virtually the whole term under medical certificate. The corresponding figures for Julv, 1911. and Julv, 1910, are respectively 326 and 299. lam sorry to report that sickness is to a certain extent interfering with the attendance. The average of absences last week was 30, and the number for to-day is 36. Measles and influenza, colds account between them for most of the cases. I was myself compelled by an attack of lumbago to be absent from school for about a week, though managing to do a certain amount of work from the house ; and I regret to say that one of the staff is now absent through sickness, though I learn that thero is hope of his being able to resume work in a day or two. The board will no doubt be already aware from the public Press that_ two of the newly-appointed Cabinet Ministers are old boys of the school, while another old boy, Colonel Bauchop, has recently taken over command of rhe* Otago military district."— The report was adopted, and it was reached to fend letters of congratulation to the Hons. Messrs Bell and Herdman. The Principal of the Girls' High School reported that the roll number was 184, one girl leaving that day Miss N. M. Campbell had been absent from the s-chool through illness for the past month, and for tho lasb fortnight of that time Miss M. Samuel had ttdien charge of her elnrses. The attendance had suffered somewhat from the prevalence of colds among the pupils, and a few cases of measles had been reported, but us yet there had been nothing of the nature of an epidemic in the school."— Received. —Accounts.— .Accounts amounting to £604 13s Id vera passed for payment, leaving a balance of £752 4s 4d.
