ENGINE-DRIVERS' DISPUTE

« An agreement was finally drawn up this morning in tho engine-drivers' dispute, heard before Mr J. R. Tnggs, Conciliation Commissioner. The clauses " hours of work," " overtime," and " rates of wages " were agreed to as published last night. Where men are employed continuously on steam traction engines or road waggons, otherwise than at agricultural work, such men shall be paid at the rate of 5s per week for getting up steam, in addition to their wage of 10s per day, provided the work is done outside the 48 hours limit. Work done on New Year's Day, Easter Monday, Labor Day, and the King's Birthday shall be paid 'for at the, rate, of time and a-half. Work done on Christmas Day, Good Friday, and Sundays shall be paid for at the rate of double time. The under-rate workers and preference of employment clauses are included. The City Corporation, the Taieri and Peninsula Milk Supply Company, and the Harbor Board have been exempted fro.™ the operations of the award, with tho exception of clause 7, which reads: " Each employer, when engaging workers, shall be entitled to engage any worker he chooses, but every such worker, if not already a member" of the union, shall -tecome a member thereof -vithin 14 days after his engagement." Special provisions have been made in regard to freezing works and the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. The award has been made for three years.
