The finishes difficult —a big sweep round to a short finishing straight, through the narrow arches of ;i bridge. Results: First Heat,—Germany beat France. Time, 6min 45sec Second Heat.—Australia, in the outside position, got away smartly, and led Gothenburg (Sweden) at 503 metres. Thence they increased their lead, the race throughout being a mere procession. Time, 6min 57sec. Thud Heat.—Berlin beat Hungary. Time, 6min 32sec. Fourth Heat.—New College (Oxford) beat Norway. Time, 6min 424 sec. Fifth Heat.—Leander beat Canada after a keen race. Time, 6min 22£ sec. Australia and Leander are drawn against one another in the next round, rowed July 18 (to-day). BRITAIN'S EXAMPLE IN SPORT. BERLIN, July 17.
