CHBisiCHtracs, December 26.—The Gazelle has returned to port, after reaching within forty miles of Stewart's Island, owing to the sickness of the engineer. The reason put forward was the discovery of a hole in the boiler, but the real fact is that the engineer was utterly inexperienced, and possessed no knowledge of the sea whatever: Stevens, who is the moving spirit in the enterprise, comes from Sydney, and is a New South Wales M.P.C. He states that he actually succeeded in reaching the scene of the wreck in the schooner Flora, and saw the hull of the General Grant lying eight fathoms down. Mr Ormond, M. r Blair, and a large party of Government officials visited Lawrence yesterday. They leave by special train. Waitahuna Races. To-day's 'Times' mentions a collision on the railway between J. Smyth and Co.'s engines. The damage done is estimated at L6O. The man who cut his throat at the Commercial Hotel on Christmas morning is likely to recover. Mr J. C. Brown has a letter in to-day's 'Times* complaining ot the 'Star's' correspondent wiring about him re the election for Gabriel's riding.
