SHEEP INSPECTOR'S REPORT.
Mr Benjamin P. Bayley, Chief Inspector of has furnished the authorities with his annual return for the Provincial District of Otago for the year ending September 30, 1876. We take from the report the following information : The number of sheep in Otago is 3,908,3i8, mode up as follows :
Having included goldfields runs in the returns as ordinary runs, the decrease of stock depastured under the head of runs amounts to about 120,000 for the year. Freeholds show an increase *ot 159,273, and hundreds an increase of 12,925. The decrease on rurs cau be ascribed to the reason assigned last year, viz., Crown land being gradually acquired as freeholds, and the unimproved land being stocked to their full carrying capacity. The sheep are classed approximately as follows:—Merinos, 2,94:9,80b'; long-wools, 107,660; cross-breds, 850,832. The number of sheep brought into the district by sea was 1,106, and overland from Canterbury 55,323. The exports numbered 177. Though the return shows the smallest iucroase for many years the list of owners shows an increase of 225 over, last year. Mr Bayley concludes by saying he can sHll report ail sheep within Otago free from scab and generally healthy, but he could not fail to observe, ou his spring visit to a portion of the district, a great want of attention on the part of sheep-owners to the necessity
of dipping their sheep for the destruction of vermin, as veil as tho want of provision being made to supply their stock with feed during the winter and early spring months. From those causes, and from over-stocking," a great loss is sustained in Wool, together with the stock being enfeebled and diseases engendered that ordinary care and attention would avert. Reports from the different districts promised fully an average lambing and full clip. %
