September 15.—Taia>oa, b.s., 228 tons, Peterson, for Timaru. Norval, ship, 1,420 tons, Young, for Portland.
The Australasian Pacific Mail steamship City of Sydney, with the San Francisco mails, arrived off the Heads at midnight, and the tide being unfavorable the p.'. Iron Age, which had been chartered for the purpose, proceeded outside and received ihe mails, whioh she brought up to port at daylight, they being conveyed to Dunedin by special train. The City crossed the bar at 12.15 p m steamed up, and anchored off thequaiautineirruund at 1.30. Though she drew 22ft aft and 18ft «\ n forw.'r.'!, the captain nnd chief engineer are satisfied that she did not touch.
The s.s. Shag arrived last evening from Shag Point, and steamed past tho port to Dnnedin. We may expect the arrival of a number of vessels at the Heads with the next westerly breeze. The china Tomaaina M'Lellan and theAnazi are now
overdue. The former is 103 da*B out and the latter M days; the Invettargill, 84 days, from Glasgow j the J. P. Garneo. 180 days, from Boston; the Panola, 89 days, from New York; and the ships Jessie Headman and Mataura, the former bS and the other 80 days, from London. The Hinemoa, which sailed from Glasgow on July 8 for Wellington, is one of the new gteamers tor the General Government, the plana of which wore sent Home some time ago. She is intended to supersede the Luna. Her dimensions are giveu «s 2ioft. by 25ft. by 15Jft., and her engines are of 150 horsepower. She may be expected in Wellington about the end of this month.— 4 N. Z. Times.' THE CLEMATIS. The capsizing; of this vessel has been so ranch spoken of that we have resolved to give a irore complete account than yet published of all known respecting her. At the inquest on the 13th inst. Mr Cashmore, her owner, stated: " There 1 was a passenger on hoard when the vessel left Auckland, named -George Giles, formerly a butoher in Queen street. I cannot say whether he was on board when the vessel capsized. I presume he was. I feel certain I should have heard from him if he was in New Zealand, and the rumors afloat in Lyttelton that he left Auckland to avoid his creditors are untrue. The master of the Clematis, George Henry Clark, I knew well. He was a good seaman; the mate Campbell had a foreigngoing master's certificate. I also knew David Taylor, an A.B. on board; the rest of the crew were unknown to me. Only one body has been found ;it was in the hwarette. I expect it is the body of the mate Campbell." (Summing up the evidence the •Press' says it is mort probable that on the afternoon of August 4th, when it was blowing so hard here from the sou'west, the vessel turaed ovV in one of the fearful gusts. No doubt it was in the day time, or more bodies would have been found below, as the men must have been working on deck. The crew probably stuck to the wreck and were washed off and drowned; but the fate of the person found below was far more ierrible. When the vessel turned there would be enough air in her to keep water down and sustain life for some time. No doubt the heat became unbearable as the air decreased, and he stripped himself to prolong his misery. There are marks i» the ceiling near the keelson, as if the wretched man had tried to cut through the planks with his knife • but no doubt strength soon failed, and he sank into the water and expired. :
ENGLISH SHIPPING. The Now Zealand Shipping Company (Limited) have received telegraphic advices from London conveying the following shipping intelligence.— Arrived, the Waipa, on the 6fch inst., after a passage oteighty-sixdays. Sailed: Bangitikei, forLyttflton; Ocean Mail, for Wellington; Samaya, for Auckland; Waitara, for Napier and Bluff; and Avona, for Otago. Loading: For Auckland, Jessie Osborn and Loch Ayr; for Wellington, the Hurunui for Canterbury, the ValparaiHO and Cardigan Castle for Otago, the Ulan M'Leod and Otaki. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. LTTrifXTON, September 16,1 p.m.—Lady bird, from Dunedin. Bujff, September 16.—The Arawata arrived here this morning. Passengers: For Dunedin—Mr and Mrs Connell, Mrs Creigh, Mrs Bannatyne and family, Miss Young, Messrs Clifford, Mills, Fulton, and twelve in the steerage, and seventy-feur tons of cargo. Bhe sails at 4 p.m. for Dunedin. A Mrs Cowper died on the passage across.
