CHRiSTCHuacH, September 16. Uma de Murska'a reappearance in opera last night drew a crowded house, and wast an immense success. A good many people are leaving here for the Kumara nub.

The Primate has written to the parishioners stating that he will appoint a Commissioner to investigate into clerical matters here, pro vided the parishioners forward monies for the expenses. Probably the parishioners will decline to accede to this request on the ground that the Primate in a letter to the Rev. Mr Townsend, published here and forwarded through the Press Agency yesterday, Bhows that the case has already been prejudged by him.

Auckland, September 15. There was an exciting contest for the City Council. Eight candidates were oat, including the three retiring members, Messrs Brett (of the Star), Hurst, and Holdship. The polling resulted in placing Mr Brett at the top of the poll with a big majority, the other two former members being defeated. The. numbers were :—Brett, 995; Maxfield, 711; Dickson, 664; Hurst, 578 ; Holdship, 520; Black, 512; Johnstone, 428: and Waddell, 392. Balclutha, September 16. Seventy-one members of the Union Football Club, under the captainship of Mr Cowie, arrived here by the 7 a.m. train to try conclusions with the Balclutha Club. Immediately on arrival a lunch was prepared at Stanbrook's for the visitors. On the conclusion match both teams will be entertained at dinner by the Balclutha Club.
