LOWER RATTRAY STREET.

To the Editor.

Sir, —Can you afford any information as to who is responsible for the maintenance of Rattray street, from the goods sheds downwards, as it appears to me to be somewhat debateable ground—a sort of noman’s pro-perty-judging from the condition in which it has been allowed to remain for several months past ? i n common with many others, I am daily compelled, in following my occupation, to traverse this portion of the street, and I can assure you it is a matter of the utmost difficulty to safely pilot a loaded, or even an empty dray through it. We draymen contribute a considerable amount to the City Corporation annually in the shape of license tees, Ac. Such being the case, I consider we have a perfect right to complain when we are compelled to risk life and limb in forcing our horses through what is termed a street, but is in reality worse than a bog. Possibly I am in error in assuming that the Corporation are liable. If so, surely the Harbor Board, the only other likely body I can think of in connection with this matter, would find it greatly to their own, and the community’s interest as well, to keep the street leading to the principal wharf in proper repair.. Where is the good of expending large sums of money in the erection of wharves if the only approach to them is to be left impassable ? Something will require to be done, whoever is liable, without further delay, otherwise the traffic will be brought completely to a standstill.—l am, &c., _ , Drayman. Dunedin, August 29.
