PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.

At the usual fortnfghtly meeting of the above Council last evening there were present the Mayor, Crs. M'Kinlay, M'Gregor, Asher, Reid, Menelaus, Graham, and Miller. The following correspondence was received : —From Mr J". Burk, asking the Council's consent to transfer hia lease of section 62 to Mr J. Anderson, which was granted. From a number of ratepayers, requesting that the footpath on the west side ol Currie street be lowered to the level of the street, which was referred to the Inspector. From the secretary of the Fire Brigade, enclosing deed of agreement between the Corporation and Brigade, and suggesting that, owing to the Council not beihg able to procure the fire engine, 500 feet of hose be obtained, at a cost of about LI 00. From Mr J. Purdie asking permission to remove a few loads of earth, which was granted subject to the Inspector's approval. From the North-East Valley Road Board enclosing an account for LIS 15s for rates of municipal sections, which the clerk was instructed to resist. From Messrs Allen and Kingstreet apprising the Council of their ration to close the Port Chalmers road for repairs close to the section of the Dunedin and Moeraki railway. From Mr John Elmer, in reference to the road leading to his property which had been closed by the Corporation for two years, and requesting: that the new road might be immediately made as agreed on by the Council. The Inspector of Works reported that the gate and road leading to the Cemetery had; been attended to and that 171 trees and shrubs had been planted in the Cemetery as requested by the Council. The Reserves Committee referred Mr to lease section 9, Town Belt, to the Council for re-consideration, and recommended that Mr Faulkner's application for lease of section 31, block 4, North Harbor and Blueskin District, at 2s Gd per acre, be granted; and that Mr Irvine's lease of section 323 not having been taken up it should be cancelled and granted to Mr Hooper, as already arranged, by the Council. After considerable discussion the whole of the leases were granted. The Works Committee recommended that tenders be called for breaking 200 yards of metal; that the footpath in front of Mr Buckan's, Magnetic street, be repaired; that the footpath -in Wickliffe Terrace be. gravelled ; that the road about four chains at the back of Constitution street to section 160, be repaired ; and that Macandrew Ter-i race be put into a proper state of repair. On the motion of Cr. M'Kisjlay the first three clauses were adopted ; and on the motion of Cr. Asher the 4th clause was referred back to the Committee for amendment, and after considerable discussion the sth clause was adopted. In reference to the last mentioned Cr. Asher intimated that he wouldf protest against Corporation money being spent for that purpose. Sundry accounts, amounting toL67 Os sd, were passed for payment. Cr. Asher requested that the notice of motion standing in his name relating to levying a royalty on all stone quarried within the municipality might be withdrawn, which was done.

There beintf na tenders for the timber on the Town Belt, Cr Asher moved " That a letter be forwarded to the Sergeant of Police requesting him to do all in his power for the protection of the timber on the Belt, and that the order to the Inspector to sell trees be rescinded," which was carried. Cr M'Kinlay's motion "That the Clerk should give notice to all squatter** on the Town Belt to quit within one month," was also agreed to. Cr. Asher reported that the Finance and Waterworks Committees would bring up a report at the next meeting. Cr. Asher's proposition—"That Beach street be metalled from the railway station to section 98, the cost not to exceed L 25," was carried.

Cr. Graham, after calling the attention of the Council to the very dangerous state of several of the crossings moved—" That the various crossings of Messrs Dodson, Miller, Crickmore, and Bolton, which are now out of repair, be properly made, subject to the Inspector's approval." Cr Menelaus moved—That the footpath in front of the Post Office be gravelled. An amendment by Cr Asher—That the Sergeant's of Police attention be called to the footpath was carried, and the meeting adjourned.
