Drttnkenness.—John Anstell pleaded guilty to this offence, and w:is ordered to pay a penalty of ss, with the usual alternative. Disorderly Condi'ct James Thomson, charged by the police with behaving in a disorderly maimer in Geovgo street, on Saturday night, after receiving a severe reprimand, was discharged. A. Brutal Assault on the I'olice.—William Kiley, a seaman belonging to the sjiip Nerval, was charged with assaulting Police-constuble Coffey last night; also with damaging that officer's hat, and with rescuing a prisoner from the custody of the police. The accused pleaded not guilty.—Constable Coffey, whose appeal anco showed the ill-treat-ment he had received, stated that shortly before ten o'clock last night, the prisoner, iu company wth several other seamen, was singing indecent songs close to the lock-up. Witness remonstrated with tLeai and atlvised them to go on board their vessel, ••■Lcn they proceeded down the railway pier close to the ttcps and created another disturbance. some difficulty witness succeeded in arresting the prisoner, who struck him on the hat with either a slung shot or the stone produced, and also on the forehead, causing a severe contusion. —Constable Murphy gave corroborative evidence, and his Wor. ship remanded the prisoner until to-morrow. —A. similar charge against another seaman* named Jas Lamb, was also remanded, his Worship observing that Captain Young had waited upon him relative to ce 1 tain charges he wishei to prefer against the prisoners.
