Monday, August 7. (Before Dr Niven, J. P., and T. Birch, Esq., J.P.)

Dbtokesness.—Joseph. Brown was fined ss, in default, twenty-four hours' imprisonment; George White, 10s, or forty-eight hours': David Brown Lister, 20s, or forty-eight hours'. A charge against James Stevenson was withdrawn, defendant having broken his shoulder-bone necessitating his removal to the Hospital. Vagrancy.—A remanded charge of this nature against Anne M'Pheraou was withdrawn, the Benevolent Institution having made arrangements for her being sent to the Female Refuge. Theft. Nicholas Charles Edwards pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness.—Prisoner was then charged with stealing a chromatic attachment for a military bugle, valued at L2, the property of F. Bobertson, dentist. He pleaded that he had never done a dishonest action in his life.—Prosecutor identified the property produced as his. It was in his possession yesterday aßd was found on prisoner last night, when he was arrested for drunkenness. Witness did not wish t© press the charge.—Prisoner said thftt ho had a wife and five children to support, and he would be ruined if he were sent to gaol.—The Bench refused to allow the charge to be withdrawn.—Constable Young stated that he found the property on prisoner on arresting him last nigbi.— Prisoner was then charged with assaulting Stewart Watoh, draper. He called at prosecutor's house iu Brown street, and committed a~ most unprovoked offence.—The Bench could not overlook the charges. For drunkenness prisoner would bo fined 103, or, in default, forty-eight hours' imprisonment ; the charge of stealing the bnglo would be dismissed, the value of the property being under 40$ ; and for assault he would be fined 10s, or, in default, forty-eigbt hours' imprisonment. Ceueltt so Animals.—Joseph Hett charged Jobn Thomson with ill-treating n rooster by kicking it. The parties were neighbors at South Duuedin, aud one of complainant's fowls had got on to defendant's property, whereupon the defendant endeavored to get rid of it by kicking and setting his dog on it.—Defendant was fined 2s 6d and costs.
