THE MAYORAL ELECTION.

To the Editor. : f P Sir, —A vast amount of discussion has taken place on this exciting topic in your : columns. But whom we are to elect is % - matter, I am sorry to say, that will cause s .■>- great deal of annoyance to all those who are < independent and unconcerned. To myself, •- being an uninterested party, it seems that both candidates have an almost equal share of convincing arguments why they should .aspire to the position. ■ I think, however, all things fairly and impartially considered; Mr Reeves is more desenring of the honorbeing conferred npon him than his opponent; and for one or two reasons. Mr Reeves, as the .majority of people are aware, is a gentleman of good, sound, common sense, and is not. lacking in either •• - ability or intelligence. He hasforseveral years efficiently fulfilled the several dnties appertaining to the office of City Councillor, and was also a representative for Dunedin in : the Provincial Council. I shall not ennmerate the several minor positions he has main- , ' tainedas a member of other local bodies ; it suffices it to say that in all these positions he did his duty—and that faithfully and- •- well. We are hot to forget the fact likewise that he opposed the present Mayor at tho previous election, and suffered defeat; and as the ratepayers have unmistakeably shown by the recent election that they desire to : f ‘ see the position a “rolling or rotatory M one, : I should say by all manner of means elect Mr Reeves. Undoubtedly he is the “most fit and proper-person,” and therefore worthy , of the support and confidence of all mtdu-f./ gent and right-minded ratepayers.—l am, &C.) ' ■ I , Civis. ' I Dunedin, July 31.
