Christchurch, July 19. Mr W. G. Brittan, one of the pioneer settlers, and for many years Chief Commissioner of Lands, is dead.
Dr Turner, who has been travelling through the Colony, lecturing on hydropathy, waa brought up at the R.M. Court to-day, charged with stealing an overcoat belonging to a -passenger on board the steamer Wellington. He was remanded till Friday.
July 20. The Provincial receipts and expenditure for the quarter ending June 30 show as followsßeceipts, 1453,345 ; expenditure, L 173,666. The receipts include LI 31,062, balance from previous quarter; L 41.858 from pasturage rents, L 187,388 from land sales, and L 66,870 from railways. The expenditure includes railway maintenance, L 3,855; and railway works, L 28,847.
Hokitika, July 19. The steamer has returned, having landed the Italian immigrants at Jackson’s Bay. All are well pleased with the appearance of their future home.
