John Thomas was charged, on remand, with assaulting Mr Inspector Barnes with a spade in Leith street on April 8. Mr Macassey defended.
The principal witnesses examined for the defence were—Drs Alexander and Niven (who agreed that the wounds were the result of hysteria rather than concussion of the brain), Messrs Wynfield, Campbell Brown, and Adams. The depositions of Dr Van Hemert, as taken in the Police Court, were also read.
