WASTE LAND BOARD.
Tne regular weekly meeting of the Waste Lands Board was held yesterday; pi eseut—Messrs A. O. Strode (in the chair), Butterworth, and Clark. Mr Jssepb. Preston applied to exchange an agricultural for a deferred payment lease for lan? in the Kyeburn district, 502 acres, with the object of purchasing the land at tfce reduction of the rents paid. The Board decided that they had no power 10 grant the application. - Messrs Connell and Moodie, for Mr A. Haldane applied for the Board's consent to granting him a lease instead of license for land at Waikawa. The Board resolved that the matter of change of tenure be reserved for a fortnight. Mr Haldane's letter of complaint to be referred to the Banger for an explanation. •
Mr Connell apologised fer having inadvertency made a mißtake at the last meeting of the Board when he stated that tin female selector under the deferred payment syßtein was about to be married, bhe had already been married to another deferred payment selector. He (Mr Connell) had not yet received instructions authorising him to state the parties names to the Board. He asked for au adjourmnent of the case till next meeting. The application for adjournment was granted. Mr Edmund Smith, on behalf of the Presbyterian Church, applied to purchase Bection 1, block 6. Wyudliam township, at the upset price of L 5 per acre, without being again submitted to public auctipn. It was resolved that the land should be advertised for sale at the next land Bale at Mataura.
Messrs Gillies, Street, and Hislop applied for reconsideration of the decision of the Board re application for land in tha Leaning Rock district. Mr Denniston, for Messrs Hanlou and Kelieher opposed the application. Mr Hislop introduced a deputation from the miners in the district.—Mr Hastie said he was one of the party who were constructing the race, which cost over L 7.000, aud waß forty miles la extent. Within a month of the complctioii of their work they fouad the ground taken away from them They had proved to the Warden's satisfaction that the ground was highly auriferous and they valued it as high as L6OO an acre.—The Chairman.- We a e bound to presume that the Go. vernment made proper inquiries before approving of the sale. It was on their suggestion that we sanctioned it.-Mr Hastie: Then it is a cruel siiame, sir, because we have been misled.—The Chairman, after some further discussion, said • It is the opinion of the Board that a re-heoring of this case should be granted, say this day week. Mr John Biddell applied for a seven years' lease of section 13, block I, Toi Toie district, under clause 54, sub-clause 5, Waste Lands Act, bavin* occupied the land under license for three years The application was refused, the applicant not having occupied the laud for three years. The District Officer, Xawrence, asked the Board to appoint a certain day for deciding by auction the right to any selection for which there is more than one applicant, in terms of clause 12, Otago Waste Lands Act. 1872 Amendment Act, W-It was resolved that the District Officer name a convenient & an * the Board will »tify the propos il. Mr W. J. Hammill, on account of the delay in the survey of section 21, block 8, Toi Tois district, requested that the Board would refund him th<s amount paid to account by him before the survey, or that he should be allowed to purchase the land at once, the amount already paid being deducted from the purchase money.—The Board refused the no ground for complaint being shown by the District Officer's report. The District Officer, Queenstown, suggested the appointment of Mr Charles Crofton Boyes as a member of the Queenstown Board of Inquiry, in place of itfr James William Eobfcrtson, deceased Approved.
Messrs Macassey and KettU gave notice of a case of appeal against the decision of the Board with reference to Mr Jmn O'Leaxy's application for section 8 block 1, Waikaka district. Ihe letter was nott;d and referred to the Government. Tue following application to purchase land under agricultural lease was approved :—John V. Alio way section 107, block 2, Leiningßock JUI °W. Mr W. Westcott complained of road lines being blocked up by Messrs It. Tubman and A. M'Phail adjoining his property in, block 1, Benger district, aud asked the Board to eompel the parties to rel move the obstruction. Mr treorge Wilson, lessee of the Ballast Reserve, Portobello, requested permission to clear the bush and scrub off said land for the purpose of laying it down in English grasses. The Board resolved to adhere to the original terms of the license, and refused the application. Mr E. Hay, for Thomas Pettigrew, applied to purchase, at LI per acre, section 64, block 4, Table K ■ T h £ J oani rcferred the application to the District Officer, requesting him to state whether the sale of the land in question would interfere in any way with the railway works, and drawing his attention to the proclamation reserving the land from bale.
The following application to exchange an agricultural for a deferred paymen'-, lease was approved Kicbard Moffat, section 27, block 1, Wendon district.
Mr James Thomson applied to purchase, at LI per acre, section 26, block 4, Waitahuna East. It was resolved that, according to the .District Officer's suggestion, the land be put up to auction, at the upset price of L2 per acre.
